French IB Exam Tips: How to Prepare with Confidence

Practical IB French preparation tips for Singapore students working on oral, writing, listening and reading skills.

IB French rewards steady preparation. Students need vocabulary, grammar and cultural awareness, but they also need exam technique: how to organise answers, respond under time pressure and speak clearly even when they are nervous.

Know your assessment format

Before revising, confirm whether you are preparing for French Ab Initio, Language B Standard Level or Higher Level. The level changes expectations for vocabulary, text types, oral interaction and written complexity.

Prepare the oral early

Do not leave oral preparation until the last few weeks. Build a bank of useful phrases for describing, comparing, giving opinions and reacting naturally. Practise with images, prompts and follow-up questions so you are ready for real interaction.

  • Practise describing an image in a structured way.

  • Prepare opinions linked to common IB themes.

  • Record yourself to check pace and pronunciation.

  • Use teacher feedback to fix repeated grammar mistakes.

Write with structure, not panic

For written tasks, students should recognise the expected text type and plan before writing. A clear structure, accurate connectors and relevant vocabulary are more valuable than trying to write overly complex sentences that collapse under pressure.

Build a weekly revision rhythm

A good IB French plan mixes short vocabulary review, grammar correction, listening practice and exam-style tasks. Students progress faster when they review errors after every assignment instead of simply moving to the next topic.
