How to Prepare for the DELF Exam

A clear DELF preparation guide for A1, A2, B1 and B2 candidates, with practical study habits and exam strategy.

The DELF exam is useful because it gives learners an internationally recognised French qualification. It also gives your French study a clear target: listening, reading, writing and speaking at a specific CEFR level.

Choose the right DELF level

Do not choose a level only because it sounds impressive. DELF is most useful when the level is realistic enough to pass but challenging enough to motivate progress. A placement test or teacher assessment can help you decide between A1, A2, B1 and B2.

Train all four skills

Many candidates practise grammar and vocabulary but forget that DELF tests communication. You need to understand audio, read efficiently, write for a purpose and speak with enough clarity to complete the task.

  • Listening: practise short recordings and note key information.

  • Reading: scan for main ideas before details.

  • Writing: learn the expected format for messages, letters or essays.

  • Speaking: rehearse introductions, opinions and role plays.

Use mock tasks before exam day

Mock practice helps you manage timing and nerves. It also reveals repeated errors: missing agreements, weak connectors, unclear pronunciation or answers that do not fully address the question.

How long does DELF preparation take?

It depends on your current level and target exam. Some learners need a few weeks of exam technique; others need several modules to build the required language level first.

Can I prepare for DELF with private tuition?

Yes. Private tuition is useful when you have a deadline, need mock oral practice or want detailed correction on writing tasks.
